What is The Magellan Exchange?

The Magellan Exchange is a consortium that provides students from member institutions with the opportunity to study in another country at an affordable cost. Participating in the student exchange program is the ideal way to learn about another culture and country. The future requires global knowledge and being at ease in other cultures, and this is the perfect opportunity to develop these skills. Students are fully immersed in the educational and social life of the host country, providing experiences they could never have any other way.

ULACIT (Universidad Latinoamericana de Ciencia y Tecnología) is a bilingual university located in Barrio Tournón, within walking distance to downtown San Jose, Costa Rica. ULACIT offers fifty-six undergraduate and forty-eight graduate programs in the fields of engineering, business, advertising, psychology, dentistry, education, and law.  Moreover, ULACIT is the only private university in Central America to be included for five consecutive years in the ranking prepared by QS World University Rankings 2011-2016.  It also ranks first place overall in the categories, ''Reputation with employer'', and ''Faculty Staff with Ph.D.''.

Undergraduate/Bachelor Courses in English
Business, Liberal Arts, TESOL & Translation, and International Relations. Students enroll in 4 courses mostly taught in the evening, worth the equivalent of 12 US credits/24 ECTS units. To view the course offerings, click the links for your field of interest: business, TESOL, general education, or international relations.  For course descriptions, please see: business, TESOL, or general education. (Please note that courses within the ACE Program as shown on the ULACIT website are not available to Magellan students.  Exchange students receive a tuition waiver for 4 courses; students may enroll in a fifth course, if desired, for an additional fee.)
Note:  Enrollment in Spanish-taught courses is only possible with a minimum of B2 fluency as demonstrated on ULACIT's Spanish language test.  A video conference interview can be conducted during the application process or after arrival to confirm language oral/communicative proficiency.  It is also very useful to provide ULACIT with a Spanish level certification (or a certification letter from the Spanish language department at the home school).

GPA needs to be at least a 2.5 and meeting any other course requirements, if any.

Language of Instruction

All courses taught in English.

Accommodation and Meals

Three meals per day while at home are provided by the host family.  Dining services are available at the cafeteria on campus.

Academic Credit

The course credit that transfer to S&T will be considered as “pass” or “fail.” The credit received from studying abroad will not affect your GPA. In order to pass a class the student needs to receive a C or better in the course. Although you will receive credits for successfully completed courses, you must work with your academic advisers to get approval for how the courses you take might fulfill specific degree requirements at S&T.
